Thai Dancers – 2010 Thai Festival in Tokyo

This weekend I had the opportunity to photograph two different events and am posting separate blog entries on each. The first one was the 2010 Thai Festival which was held in Yoyogi Park near Harajuku. The festival is an annual event and spans two days of festivities and is very heavily attended by local Japanese, as well as Foreigners living in Japan.

The main attraction for me was the dance performances which were carried out at multiple times during the day. Thai dance costumes are extremely elaborate and colorful and I wanted to be able to photograph some of the little dancers as they performed. The thick crowds made it very difficult to approach the stage, and so I took my chances at the back door where the dancers prepared for their grand entrance.  As luck would have it, there was a five minute window where the dancers gathered to line up for a parade and I snapped away.

People who know me know how much I like Thai culture and food. This event was a wonderful opportunity to enjoy both. Next time however, I will make sure I get there early enough to get a good seat 😉
